Rebecca Case Photography Exhibition
The East Lansing Public Art Gallery presents photographer Rebecca Case in an exhibit entitled "Journeys: A Photographic Recollection." The exhibition features images from her travels abroad, and it will be free and open to the public through September 4, at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center (819 Abbot Road). One Book, One Community
The month-long One Book, One Community program, co-sponsored by the
City of East Lansing and MSU, encourages the city-university community
to read the same book and come together to discuss it in a variety of
settings. The book, "They Poured Fire on Us from the Sky," is also an
assigned reading for all incoming MSU freshmen. Through September 18, a
series of events centered on the book will take place including:
* “From Sudan to Lansing: Lost Boys Tell Their Story.” September 8,
7-8:30 p.m., Kellogg Center, 55 S. Harrison Road, Lincoln Room (parking
will be validated). The Lansing area has one of the largest
concentrations of "Lost Boys of Sudan" in the country. The panel will
explore the various experiences of these young men as they went to
school and/or work, and began to become assimilated to the U.S.
* Writing Workshop: Travelers Together and Alone: Writing
About life's Journeys. September 9 and 16; 4-6 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., East
Lansing Public Library, 950 Abbot Rd., Community Room. Register for

* “Echoes of Africa:
An African Experience.” September 14, 1-2:30 p.m., Adams Field, MSU
campus. Experience the sounds of African drumming and participate in

Impression 5 Science Center
The Impression 5 Science Center will host the following programs during the next weeks:
September 13:
Colorific Super Saturday. Visit Impression 5 to learn how colors are
made, to explore color mixing and to make your own color wheel. Create
your own watercolors and investigate how many different colors you can
make.
September 14:
Scientific Sunday. Explore the question “Why do leaves change color?”
Make a plant cell and explore how plants work with leaf chromatography
and leaf prints.

“Permanent Collection” by Thomas Gibbons
The BoarsHead Theatre’s 2008-2009 season will start with “Permanent Collection” by Thomas Gibbons. The performance is a searing drama starring Meshach Taylor and it will run through September 21. For a schedule of performances and further details please visit the BoarsHead Theatre website.
Old Town BluesFest
The Old Town BluesFest is a two-day free music festival that brings national, regional, and local acts to an audience of roughly 15,000 people from across Michigan and nearby states. Each artist at the festival is asked to play an original composition, something that hasn't been played at any other festival. This year's festival will take place on September 19-20, on the streets of Old Town, surrounded by the best of the Capital City's art galleries and vendors offering ethnic food, beverages, art, clothing and crafts. Artists include 6 Hands Down, Blues Skory-oke, Carl Weathersby, Frog & the Beeftones, George Bedard & the Kingpins, Josh Boyd and the V.I.P. Band, JR Clark Band, Kathleen & the Blues Junkies, Madcat & Kane, Marble Garden, Mike Daniels Blues Drum Clinic, Sharrie Williams, Stan Budzynski & 3rd Degree, The Alligators, and Those Delta Rhythm Kings. "Play It Again, Sam"
The online exhibition "'Play It Again, Sam' -- Lost Chords of the
Labor and Progressive Movements" features music from the 1930-40s, a
particularly fertile period of the labor and progressive movements.
There are a number of little known songs, songs that are in danger of
passing, unrecognized, into our musical history. The songs are sung by

The Picture Man: Lansing through the Lens of R. C. Leavenworth
Michigan Historical Museum (702 West Kalamazoo Street, Lansing) features "The Picture Man: Lansing through the Lens of R. C. Leavenworth" in its special exhibit gallery through September 30. R. C. Leavenworth, using a horse-drawn darkroom, started out photographing lumbering and mining camps in northern Michigan. In 1919, he moved to Lansing to document the Capital City's transformation into an automobile manufacturing center. His photography captured images as diverse as street scenes, car parts, labor strikes, vaudeville troupes and football games. Admission is free of charge. Art History through Touch and Sound
Art Education for the Blind presents Art History through Touch and Sound Online. This is a unique multi-sensory art encyclopedia for people with visual impairments and all students of art. Join discussion groups with experts, community listservs, and find information on programs near you; explore Web-based art courses; review the Disability Awareness Training, Handbook for Museums and Educators, audio course, teacher resource center, and other research. Allen Street Farmers’ Market
The Allen Street Farmers’ Market, located on the corner of E. Kalamazoo and Allen St., has opened for its 5th season and will run every Wednesday through October 29. New extended hours run from 2:30 – 7:00 p.m. until Labor Day. The market features local farmers, vendors, and Eastside neighbors. Among a few of the current offerings are: AppleSchram Orchards’ sweet or hot Italian Brats/Sausages; Felzke Farm Strawberries; green onions, greens, and flowers at the Vangs’ booth; potted herbs and perennial butterfly bushes from Clark Sugarbush; organic shell, flat & sugar snap peas from Nodding Thistle Farm; free-range beef, chicken and turkey sausage, whitefish, walleye and yellow perch from Alice's Kitchen. Community Photo Contest
The City of East Lansing is hosting a 2008 Community Photo Contest: "The Essence of East Lansing." Submit up to five photographs for possible inclusion in the 2009 Community Calendar & 2008 Annual Report. From outdoor community events and attractions to public art, a vibrant downtown, beautiful neighborhoods, community parks and more, East Lansing is the perfect muse for any photographer. Deadline for submission is Wednesday, September 10 at 5 p.m. Photos can be submitted two ways: 1) Upload Photos Online (entry and model release forms still must be mailed or faxed to City Hall) OR 2) Mail or drop off photos on a CD to City Hall (entry and model release forms must accompany CD).
